Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey and the Newton Business Improvement Association (BIA) are excited to announce the grand opening of the Newton Pop-Up Plaza on Wednesday, August 14 at 12:00 p.m. at 72 Avenue and 137 Street. Enjoy free shaved ice, live music by Ranj Singh, and art activities.
“Activating our public spaces and plazas is essential for fostering community engagement and connection,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “The success of the Surrey Civic Plaza near City Hall has shown us the impact that a vibrant, accessible space can have on our residents. This new pop-up plaza in Newton is a testament to our ongoing commitment to transforming public spaces into community hubs. This project aligns with our Focus Newton Action Plan, fostering community engagement and providing a space for residents to connect and enjoy. We are thrilled to open this community space and look forward to the activities planned over the next two months.”
The plaza includes seating, greenery, table tennis, games, a stage, and decorative lighting. It will be open until September 30, offering activities and live music every Friday night at 5:00 p.m., featuring performances by Neil Harnett, Rachael Chatoor, Ranj Singh, and Mike Kelly. We encourage everyone to come out, participate, and make the most of this wonderful space.”
Developed in partnership with the Newton BIA as part of the Focus Newton Action Plan, the temporary plaza was created in response to community feedback, addressing the desire for more public gathering places and aiming to energize downtown Newton with a vibrant public space.
